Pallets are durable tools, but they do not last forever. A worn-out pallet can not only cause logistical disruption, but also represents a safety risk in the warehouse. We show the 5 most important warning signs that indicate it is time to replace it.
1. Several boards are broken or missing
If two or three of the top or bottom boards are cracked, broken or completely missing, the pallet’s load capacity decreases. Replacing one board can still be economical, but if more than 5 elements are damaged, it is better to replace it with a used or new pallet.
2. The blocks (feet) are damaged
The pallet blocks hold the entire structure — if they are cracked, broken or crumbling, the pallet is not safe. Forklift forks enter between the blocks, so a damaged block can easily lead to instability, the load tipping over or even an accident.
Rule of thumb: if more than 5 elements in total (blocks + boards) are damaged, repair is already less economical — replacement is recommended.
3. Mould, fungus or strong smell
Mould can easily appear on pallets stored in a damp environment. This is especially problematic:
- In food industry use — a mouldy pallet is a hygiene risk and cannot be used.
- In closed warehouses — spores can spread to other goods as well.
- For export shipments — the destination country may reject goods arriving on a mouldy pallet.
4. The pallet “rocks” — it has lost stability
If the pallet wobbles when placed on a flat surface, this indicates structural deformation. This can happen as a result of overloading, improper storage or repeated repairs. An unstable pallet is especially dangerous in racking systems, because the load can slip off.
5. The quality marking is illegible
If the pallet is so worn that the standard marking can no longer be identified, some partners and logistics providers may refuse to accept it.
