Pallet repair is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce packaging and logistics costs for your business. But how do you know when repair is worth it, and when it is better to buy another pallet instead?
When is repair worth it?
- Minor damage: broken deck boards, loose nails or cracked corner elements can often be repaired quickly and cost-effectively.
- The structure is still intact: if the pallet’s main frame — blocks and bottom boards — is sound, repair is almost always worth considering.
- EUR grading matters: a MÁV-REC certified repair facility, such as ours, restores the pallet according to the EUR standard. (EPAL pallet repair requires a separate licence; the MÁV-REC certificate alone does not cover EPAL repair.)
- You use pallets in larger volumes: with higher quantities, the price difference between repair and buying another pallet can add up to significant savings.
When is it better to buy another pallet?
- 5+ elements are damaged: if more than five elements — blocks or boards — need replacement, it is usually better to buy a used or new pallet instead.
- Mould or contamination: in the food industry this is a disqualifying factor, so replacement is required.
- You need it for export: some destination countries accept only new or near-new pallets.
In the cases above, we can buy your pallet from you.
Summary
Rule of thumb: if the repair cost is below 50% of the price of a new pallet and the structure is sound, repair is worth it. If you are unsure, request a free condition assessment from us.
